A new VIS activity is taking off: The Digital Science Lab
With this new VIS activity, we will give the opportunity to the fifth grade of upper secondary schools to discover personally the world of the scientific research. They will see the data with their own eyes; will process it entering into the same logic, though simplified, that all the researchers deal with on a daily basis. Digital Science Lab starts in collaboration with the Particle Physics Area. This collaboration is based on the International Masterclasses model, which is organised by CERN and the Institutes they work with, such as the National Institute of Nuclear Physics.
Two classes are going to take part at the first two appointments on 2017. They will have a quite full on agenda of seminars and laboratory classes in the media room of Palazzo Carovana. The students are going to have at their disposal a series of interactive media locations where they will be able to study real data. The participants are going to examine the data collected by experiments installed at the Large Hadron Collider, at CERN in Geneva. They will try to find out the mysteries that hide behind the particles revealed in the experimental equipment.
By the end of their experience, the students will have had the opportunity to test themselves for the first time with some of the methodologies with which the highest Particle Physics research is conducted.
The day will be organised as follows:
- 09:00 – 09:45 Introductive Seminar on Particle Physics
- 09:45 – 10:30 A more detailed seminar on the experiment that will be analyzed
- 10:30 – 11:00 Break
- 11:00 – 12:30 Digital Science Lab Experience
- 12:30 – 13:00 Conclusions and Question Time.
